Firstly let me mention the shipping on this item. I went for supersaver shipping and it arrived within 15 hours! Fantastic! I guess it's too heavy to ship in the normal post and so went to Parcel Force.

Anyway, the UPS. It's small and well made with 8 sockets (wide enough for most power bricks), 4 are on the UPS and 4 are surge protection only.

As for power, it's enough to keep my 20" iMac, ADSL router and network switch running for about 15 minutes. OSX picks up the UPS via USB without any of the APC drivers so it's really easy to configure.

Perfect!
Very important piece of kit and this is a good one

Firstly if you do any work on your PC that is of importance then please buy a UPS as it can save you a lot of grief.

The APC is a neat package and easy to install. The UPS includes 4 standard 3 pin sockets with UPS and spike protection and another 4 with spike protection only. The included software is easy to install and simple to configure. The shutdown process works fine and puts your machine into hibernation so that you do not loose any information.

I have a Belkin UPS on my other PC (see my review) and although the Belkin has a more sophisticated shutdown and monitoring function it does not have standard 3 pin socket connections and uses a serial interface to the PC. So for a simple fit and forget device I would go for the APC. Highly recommended.

I bought this UPS because I was buying a new PC for my wife and I wanted to be sure that the electrical supply didn't cause any issues. We live in an area where historically there have been a large number of power outages in the last five years or so, and I have always suspected that it had something to do with the last two computers giving up the ghost.

I chose it because of the standard wall plug type that it offered, and it's relatively small size. It is bigger than it looks on the pictures, though. A bit of a surprise, but one which I quickly overcame. It stays cool during operation, and is mostly unnoticeable during standard operation, which is nice.

It beeps when there is a power cut, even if there is currently no load, which if it is in a bedroom is a bit of a shock at 4am. Luckily, you can easily switch off the unit, which silences the alarm.

I have it hooked up powering computer, monitor and internet, with the printer on the surge protection plugs on the other side.

It comes with the battery disconnected and a big warning sticker over the plugs which it is impossible to miss. I had to plug in the battery myself, which was a little scary, and I was concerned that I might break the connector. It is a very tight fit. Because it is mains voltage, I would recommend wearing insulating gloves.
Great UPS

Arrived quickly as ever. I have it running with a 2008 imac 20" and it's plugged in directly to the computer via usb, not via a hub. Apple software takes care of everything so no need to install APC software. I've tested by turning off the wall plug with the system in sleep mode - the computer wakes up, then waits according to my system preferences duration settings (3 mins), then shuts down the computer - brilliant! If in normal operation it just waits the 3 mins again and shuts down safely. Exactly what I wanted. I had an old G4 imac before this, and brown-outs/spikes/cuts in the power supply without a UPS cost me £250 in repairs, following by finally a complete power supply failure. I'm hoping this will stop any future occurance of that! Good buy
Simply the best!

After trying several `pretenders' products one of which toasted my G5 PowerMac after a power cut, I've finally gone with the people that know about UPS!
Installation is trivial. Plug the USB lead into your MAC, no software to load, no drivers required it's just recognised and works.
Its not the prettiest device I've ever bought, and it's a meaty lump, -- like a wall-wart on steroids, so if you are going to wall mount it, (screw slots on the back) make sure you do a decent job otherwise bits of plasterboard will magically appear around your feet.
Don't forget to check you have plugged your `battery backed' items into the correct 3 sockets. The other 3 have transient protection only.
So in summary:
Excellent value for money and it does exactly what it says on the tin!
